Iowa HOBY 2021 Seminar Updates

By Seminar

Greetings and Happy New Year!

For over 20 years, Iowa Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has provided leadership education and service-learning to the youth of Iowa. Iowa HOBY is built on the commitment of over 100 volunteers and the partnership of college campuses (to host the seminar). Yet, the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the daily lifestyle for many of us; virtual meetings and events became the new normal. While virtual interaction can never replace the in-person engagement and interaction previously core to HOBY, we live in unprecedented times where many colleges are still conducting virtual learning, and statewide limited gathering restrictions stand.

For the safety of our volunteers, ambassadors, and partnering organizations, the Iowa HOBY Corporate Board has voted to hold the 2021 Iowa Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar as a hybrid seminar*. Both 2020 deferred ambassadors and new 2021 ambassadors will receive an email from the 2021 Leadership Seminar Chair asking them to choose one of the multiple statewide locations to attend a limited gathering, 3-hour, in-person event; the rest of the seminar will be held virtually.

There is still time to register new students for this event! We have included a registration poster in this email for you to use with your students and community. Student registration is $225, and we can’t wait to have a student from your school attend! You can find our digital registration kit HERE, or you can register your student HEREPlease complete your student registration(s) by March 1st, 2021.

Iowa HOBY is excited to continue our legacy of service and excellence for the youth of Iowa. Collectively, we can all help define a new era for Iowa HOBY. We look forward to this one-of-a-kind HOBY experience, and we hope that you’ll join us along the way.

Sincerely,

Aaron Horsfield

Iowa HOBY 2020 Seminar Decision

By Seminar

For Immediate Release

Dear Iowa HOBY Ambassadors and Families,

We understand these are trying times for many of you; your safety and well-being are our top priority. After many conversations at the state and national level, Iowa HOBY has decided not to host an in-person seminar during the 2020 summer season.

HOBY Nationals has an incredibly strict No Refunds Policy and is providing currently registered families with two options: defer your registration to the 2021 summer seminar or use your registration to participate in a two-day virtual experience this summer.

2021 Seminar

The 2021 Iowa HOBY Seminar will be held at Drake University. We are currently working with the university to confirm a weekend, but the seminar will either be June 11-13, 2021 or June 18-20, 2021. If currently registered ambassadors have completed their payment, their payment will be transferred to the 2021 seminar year. Once a date has been confirmed, we will share additional information with you so you can plan accordingly.

Virtual Seminar

The Iowa HOBY team understands you may be craving content during this time. The virtual seminar is a two-day program using a nationally-provided, video-based, online platform. Each day would include seven hours of (live) online programming including speakers, panels, and virtual “group time” with other Iowa ambassadors. The virtual seminar program has been developed by the national HOBY organization to mimic the traditional HOBY experience. Iowa HOBY will be collaborating and communicating with families and students who elect the virtual seminar.

While virtual seminar attendees will be afforded the best experience we can possibly provide, Iowa HOBY stands by the belief that the “HOBY magic” is best experienced in-person.  Our recommendation to all students and families is that your child defer their HOBY experience to the summer of 2021. We recognize this unparalleled time necessitates the need for various options. Therefore, if you choose to attend the virtual seminar, we will do the best we can to make it as close to a traditional HOBY experience as possible.

We understand this decision is not easy to make. Our national organization will be contacting you with more information regarding your choices. In order to ensure timely communication of next steps and seminar details, please fill out the form coming to you from HOBY Nationals by Friday, May 15th, 2020; one submission per student. Regardless of your choice, your student will walk away having experienced Iowa HOBY!

If you have any questions, please contact our Leadership Seminar Chair, Kaily Walsh (lsc@iahoby.org) at your earliest convenience. We know these are trying times. We thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we are all doing the best we can to adjust in this new time. Have an outstanding day!

In Service,

Kaily Walsh

Letter from the President – June 2016

By Letter from President, Seminar, Volunteer

IHorsfieldowa Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership has seen many changes since our last seminar. We have moved to a new location, formed new partnerships, and most importantly, returned to our roots. HOBY was founded by Hugh O’Brian in 1958 on the basis of three key pillars: Empower, Lead, and Excel. He wanted to encourage young individuals to achieve their highest potential and recognize that while we are not all equal, each of us can become a leader.

As a not-for-profit and leadership seminar, Iowa HOBY strives to engage future leaders in current events, stay active on social media, and promote lifelong service and education. In my five years with HOBY, I have almost always heard the ambassadors say “You have to have been there to experience HOBY. It changed my life.” While Iowa HOBY cannot replicate the entire experience with others, we can help family, friends, and community members understand the experience. Through live streaming, media coverage, and a keynote speaker specifically for our parents and guests every Iowan will have an opportunity to engage in the fun. Through a new collaboration with the World Food Prize, a service activity with Meals from the Heartland, and an opportunity for our young ambassadors to engage with community leaders, the 2016 Iowa HOBY seminar will empower each young leader to find their passion.

Iowa HOBY is governed by a volunteer Corporate Board and the seminar is organized by an additional volunteer team. While the seminar only lasts three days, Iowa HOBY is a lifelong resource. I implore you to track your service hours using our free service and set goals. It is never too late to connect the dots and find your passion. Have an outstanding seminar!

Warmest Regards,

Aaron Signature

Iowa HOBY is a leadership organization for Iowa high school students that helps provide them the skills to become leaders that have a positive impact. This year we are hosting an event for our students to connect them to the admired, respected, and innovative leaders in Iowa. The theme for our conference this year is connectedness. We are hosting this networking event to demonstrate to our ambassadors how powerful networking can be and that people are willing to help them advance their goals if only they work towards growing relationships.

STATE LEADERSHIP SEMINAR MOVES TO DRAKE UNIVERSITY

—Iowa HOBY to bring nearly 200 high school leaders to Des Moines next summer—

Iowa Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) is excited to announce that its 2016 seminar will be held at Drake University. Every year, Iowa HOBY brings together nearly 200 of the best and brightest high school sophomores from across the state. The three-day program provides opportunities for students to explore the in-depth ethical and moral questions facing today’s leaders and focuses on developing leadership skills through service and volunteerism.

Every summer since 1978, the Iowa HOBY leadership seminar has inspired high school sophomores to become effective, ethical leaders in their schools, communities and the world. From 2009 to 2015, the annual Iowa HOBY leadership seminar was held at Central College in Pella. Before that, it was at Graceland University in Lamoni. In 2016, Iowa HOBY is continuing its tradition of partnering with an Iowa college; the seminar will be held at Drake University June 24-26.

An Iowa HOBY seminar features more than 20 keynote speakers and panelists, along with leadership programming and service opportunities for sophomore ambassadors in attendance. HOBY ambassadors are selected from each of Iowa’s public and private high schools. The seminar is run entirely by volunteers: there are no paid positions with Iowa HOBY.

For information about recommending a sophomore student to Iowa HOBY, or to learn how you could get involved with the program, please contact Allison Poss, leadership seminar chair, at lsc@www.iahoby.org.

Filmmaking at Iowa HOBY

By Video

After a life-changing ambassador year in 2011, and four subsequent transformative years on staff as a JuFa, I was incredibly eager to mix my love for HOBY with my life’s passion: filmmaking. This year I filmed the Iowa HOBY seminar and will be working hard allsummer editing and working on promotional videos for Iowa HOBY’s marketing endeavors! This experience has been so important to my growth as an artist and as a person. Filming and editing with the fast paced nature of HOBY was very trying, but so rewarding. After putting in roughly 60 hours over three days between my partner, Thomas, and I we were so thankful for the opportunity. Next summer we will be headed to India to finish shooting a documentary I started in 2014. Not only did HOBY give us the practice of working together in high intensity conditions and under the documentary mode, but more importantly, the experience at HOBY inspired us to work harder; we are more passionate about our future projects than ever before.
